Nagano
Nagano is a compact, runner-friendly city where you can start from your hotel and quickly reach quiet streets, riverside paths, and gentle hills with views of the Japanese Alps. Early-morning runs up to Zenko-ji Temple let you move through calm, historic streets before the tourists arrive, and the cooler, drier climate makes longer efforts much more comfortable than in Japan’s big coastal cities.
Running parts of the Nagano Marathon course is one of the best ways to feel the city: you follow wide roads, rivers, and open views of the mountains that framed the 1998 Winter Olympics. With easy access to nearby onsen areas for recovery, Nagano lets you combine solid training, clean air, and classic Japanese scenery in a single run.
